May 7th Events for Diamond Princess Guests

Just in time for the arrival of the Diamond Princess, a few local events will be held for cruise passengers looking to stretch their legs and explore the town. These events and locations are only available on May 7th, so be sure to check some of them out!

1. Kimono Shippou Photo Spot (9:00–14:00)

After disembarking, head toward the former site of Toba Castle at Shoriyama Park. For just one ¥500 coin, you can try on a traditional Japanese kimono and take photos overlooking the bay and its islands. The staff will help you wear the kimono properly, so don’t worry—this is sure to be a memorable souvenir of your visit to Japan.

2. ToBAshare (9:00–14:00)

If you’re interested in bringing home a vintage kimono, make your way down from the castle ruins to ToBAshare café. In addition to drinks, there will be several vintage kimonos available for purchase. ToBAshare will also be offering special wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) from the local handmade sweets shop Ume-no-ya. Made primarily from plant-based ingredients, wagashi is a great option for vegetarians too.

Handmade accessories by ne-ke will also be on display and for sale.

Inside ToBAshare, local artist PrinkM (Miwa) will be creating Japanese finger calligraphy on-site. She can even take requests if you have a name or meaningful word you’d like written. Be sure to stop by and say hello!

3. Traditional Noh Theater Masks at Kata Shrine

Just up the street from ToBAshare is Kata Shrine, where there will be a rare opportunity to see traditional wooden Noh theater masks. These masks, used by local performers for generations, are not typically displayed—so don’t miss this chance to get up close with these skillfully crafted pieces.

4. Toba Kadoya – Former Village Headman’s Residence (10:00–13:00)

At the other end of town is Toba Kadoya, the former residence of the village headman, now a local museum featuring historical artifacts. Admission is free, and the beautifully restored building is worth exploring.

On May 7th, Kadoya will host traditional tea ceremonies for cruise guests. The cost is ¥500 per person, and each session accommodates 5–6 people. The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes and will be available from 10:00 to 13:00. Feel free to explore the museum before or after your session. Kadoya is also conveniently located near DAISO, so anyone heading in that direction should stop by and have a look.

Event information is available at Toba’s Marine Terminal and the information booth at Marine Park (the second loop bus stop).
